Loha Campaign

The Statue of Unity is meant to salute the spirit of Loh Purush (Iron Man) of India, Sardar Patel, whose dedication and resolve led to the unification of India. For the person who led many movements for the farming community, it was decided to involve the farmers who could donate their used implements and tools from which the iron would be recovered to reuse in the building of the statue.
The LOHA campaign, a Gujarat Government initiative, connected the farmers with their leader, Sardar Patel, a champion of farmers’ rights in his time. Used farm tools and soil samples were collected from 169,078 locations across the country for use in the project, from the farmers as a unique tribute to Sardar Patel. The iron thus collected was melted and converted into reinforced bars which were used in the project. The soil samples have been used in building the Wall of Unity.
